Joshua Ryan Butler
Joshua Ryan Butler serves as pastor of local and global outreach at Imago Dei Community, a nationally influential church in the heart of urban Portland, OR. Locally, Joshua oversees Imago Dei’s sixteen city ministries that serve in areas such as foster care, human trafficking, and homelessness. Internationally, Joshua develops the church’s international partnerships in areas such as clean water, HIV-support, and church planting. Joshua is also a worship leader at Imago Dei, writing many of the songs sung by the community and infusing theological depth and poetic imagination into the worship of the church.
Joshua’s voice is theologically rich (holding a high view of the Gospel), poetically imaginative (with fresh insight that shifts paradigms), and easy-to-read (caring for the hearts of his audience with practical relevance). Joshua was a finalist for ECPA’s new author of the year in 2015, with his first book, The Skeletons in God’s Closet: The Mercy of Hell, the Surprise of Judgment, the Hope of Holy War (Thomas Nelson, 2014). His second book, The Pursuing God: A Reckless, Irrational, Obsessed Love that's Dying to Bring Us Home, also by Nelson, released in May 2016.
Joshua holds a BA from the University of Oregon (triple major: international studies [with Honors], history, Asian studies; Minor: Japanese) and an MDiv in Theological Studies (with Honors) from Multnomah Seminary.
Joshua lives with his wife Holly and daughter Aiden in Portland, Oregon.
