Mary Marantz grew up in a trailer in rural West Virginia. When she was eighteen, she was accepted to the only school she applied to—West Virginia University—but genuinely thought about not going that fall, so convinced was she that “the girl from a trailer” was guaranteed to flunk out in a school of over 20,000. Four years later, not only was she was graduating with straight A’s (except for that one B+ she still thinks about to this day) with a double major in Political Science and Philosophy, but she did so receiving the single highest honor the school awards: the Order of Augusta. Given to only eight graduating seniors each year (after narrowing selection down to the top 0.25 percent of the graduating class), the Order of Augusta was the first time Mary could see that maybe—just maybe—her past did not disqualify her from doing good things.
Following college, Mary studied for a year in England on a full-ride Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship gaining her Masters in Moral Philosophy before returning home for law school where she graduated from the number one program in the country: Yale Law School. Upon graduation, Mary was offered positions at two top law firms—one in London and one in New York—making a six-figure salary plus bonuses and benefits. She instead decided to start a photography business with her new husband, Justin. After years of trying to outrun failure, when she was finally faced with “safe, secure, and supposed to” she instead decided to leap, believing the net would appear.
Ten years later, Mary and Justin run one of the most highly successful photography businesses in the industry. They have been named one of the top 20 photographers in the world by Profoto when they were awarded their highly prestigious “Legends of Light” distinction, and have also been named top photographers by Brandsmash and SLR Lounge, as well as featured in top publications such as, Martha Stewart, Inside Weddings, and Style Me Pretty. In addition to being world-renowned for their signature, iconic work, Mary has also become a sought-after global speaker, teaching thousands at workshops and conferences in places like Australia, England, Germany, the Netherlands, and all around the US. She is also the founder and editor-in-chief of twin wedding blogs: The Black Tie Bride and The Well-Groomed Groom.
Mary recently signed a five-book contract with Revell, with her first book, Dirt, due to release in March ‘2021.
Although she is world-recognized for her photography, what Mary has become most known for is her writing and speaking. Over 50,000 people tune in daily for uplifting posts, emails, and videos from her, and she has been honored to already have her writing featured in Business Insider, MSN, Bustle, and Brit+Co just last year alone. But on her best days, you can find her at her 1880s fixer-upper by the water with her husband, Justin, and their very fluffy golden retriever, Atticus—and drinking way more coffee than any normal person should.
